New River Gorge National Park & Preserve
America's newest national park is roughly 63 miles north of Princeton — about 1 hour 15–20 minutes via I-77 and US-19 to Fayetteville and the iconic New River Gorge Bridge. Whitewater rafting, hiking, climbing and the Canyon Rim overlook boardwalks make it an unbeatable day out.
🍁 Going in September?
This is prime time. Here's how the season stacks up:
- Fall color just begins in late September, peaking early-to-mid October — the earliest color shows on the high ridgelines.
- Gauley Season whitewater releases start the Friday after Labor Day and run about six weekends — some of the biggest rapids in the East.
- Note: Bridge Day (the one day cars are stopped and BASE jumpers leap off the bridge) is the third Saturday in October, not September — plan accordingly.
